Light Up Chhanga

Through the generous support of individuals like you, Light up Chhanga provides safe, reliable, solid-state lighting systems for homes in rural, remote villages in Nepal so that school age children have the opportunity to read and do school work at night.

Homes in these villages have no means of illumination after sundown except from fire. Sundown occurs as early as 4:00 in the afternoon. Fire provides inadequate lighting for reading and the smoke is harmful to those inside the home, as well to the environment. Other means of obtaining light are through the use of small kerosene lamps - the kerosene is costly to obtain and also poses risks to health and the environment. Through your generosity, we provide lighting solutions for homes and families that deal with all of these problems.

We are a registered Canadian charity based in Calgary, Canada. We work closely with the Calgary-based Light Up The World Foundation leveraging their expertise and experience.

The lighting systems are solid-state lighting systems originally designed by Dr. David Irvine Halliday of Light up the World Foundation. The systems are manufactured by Pico Power Nepal in Kathmandu, Nepal, and are delivered, installed, and managed by village residents.

Our project originated in a village called Chhanga which is in the Khumbu region of Nepal. Chhanga and its neighboring villages are the primary focus of our organization.
